RE-USED VEGETABLE OIL DRIVES FORWARD OUR ENVIRO DREAM

Uptown call on local cafes and restaurants to give them the oil and diesel drivers to convert - saying they’ll save you money

SOUTHWARK FIRM Uptown Oil, which specialises in recycled biodiesel, is encouraging local drivers to convert and cafe and resturants to contact them, in a bid to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

But the good part is that it saves you money. For those drivers running vehicles on diesel it costs nothing to convert.
And the waste vegetable oil collected from cafes and restaurants is picked up for free by the firm - cutting down the waste costs of those businesses.

On October 16, Ed Miliband Secretary for Energy and Climate Change, committed the UK to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 as a major contribution to a global deal on climate change.

In a statement made in the houses of parliament he said: "Arctic sea ice has melted faster than expected. Global emissions have grown faster. And the impacts of each degree of climate change are known to be worse. We will amend the Climate Change Bill to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, and that target will be binding in law.  However, we all know that signing up to an 80 per cent cut by 2050 is the easy part. The hard part is meeting it..."

Uptown Oil has a slightly different view. Why can't it be possible? If just a small percentage of vehicle owners switched to 100 per cent recycled biodiesel there would be a positive reduction in carbon emissions, and they'd save money too!

Uptown claim that the cab pictured saves enough carbon each year to fill three Olympic swimming pools!

Uptown Oil is the only licensed biodiesel manufacturer in London, and along with Ciaran the cabbie (in his lovely cab pictured above), Jason and Nigel at Uptown Oil have started working towards cleaner city air - a positive and practical way to tackle climate change and pollution.

Uptown biodiesel is made from waste vegetable oil (WVO) onsite in King James Court, off Borough Road near the Elephant & Castle. WVO is collected from London's catering establishments, then filtered, processed and turned into high quality, 100% recycled biofuel. This biofuel is then ready to be used in diesel vehicles.

Each litre of biodiesel used saves over 1kg of CO2, compared to mineral diesel (DERV).

Life cycle analysis shows that Uptown biodiesel saves at least 80% CO2 compared to mineral diesel.

The exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide and particulate matter from biodiesel are 45% lower when compared to that of DERV. Sulphur emissions, a cause of air quality concern, are also eliminated.

100% recycled biodiesel does not steal land away from food as virgin biofuels do - Uptown Oil in contrast reverses this and makes the most of London's catering industry by-product, which would otherwise go to landfill.

Uptown Oil approached London breweries offering to collect the WVO from their pubs and close the loop by providing 100% recycled biodiesel for their delivery vans. Wandsworth based Young's brewery has picked up the environmental baton and are working with Uptown Oil to make our city's air cleaner.
